Mom invents alarm for kids in hot cars

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FL -- Felicia Marshall, a single parent, is tired of the recurring headlines that have dominated the Summer news, whether print of broadcast: 'Child Left In Hot Car.'

"When I see how many children have been left behind and how many children have lost their lives it saddens me," Marshal said.

The postal carrier and mother of three knows first hand what it is like to leave a young child in a hot car, if even for a few minutes.

One day returning from the store Marshall said she was in such a rush to get the grocery out of the vehicle she thought her mom had taken the child out of the car seat but she did not and it went unnoticed for a few minutes.

"I had heard a lot of stories prior to that and it really didn't bother me because I am one of those parents who says I'm always on top of everything," she said. "But once it happened to me I was thinking someone needs to do something about it."

Every summer, heartbreaking and preventable deaths happen when children are left alone in hot cars.

Since 1990 more than 600 U.S. children have died that way. It spurred Marshall to develop what she calls the 'Sound of Life,' an alarm system.

"It was birth out of my own personal experience of leaving a child in the car," she said.

The safety alarm is designed to fit any model vehicle and two piece system would sound the car alarm if the engine is off, the doors are locked and a child is left sitting in a car seat.

"It is triggered by any motion, any weight, any body heat," she said. "It would automatically sound your car alarm to let you know the child has been left inside."

Marshall said a Pittsburgh company has designed the product. Now she needs funding for it to be manufactured.

"We've done the research," she said. "We know it works."

Marshall said she would love the see the 'Sound of Life' on store shelves and in vehicles soon.

"Something like this could save a life," said Marshall.
