A measure increasing sales tax in the City of Stockton to set aside money for the library and recreation system takes effect April 1.

A measure increasing sales tax in the City of Stockton to set aside money for the library and recreation system takes effect April 1.

In November of 2016, more than two-thirds of Stockton voters approved the measure. More than 50 people attended a special city council meeting at Stockton’s City Hall to discuss what will happen next with that Measure “M” funding.

Measure “M” funding will now be called the Strong Communities Initiative.

Many of the community members who helped get the measure passed attended the meeting. Representatives of local schools, sports teams, and non-profit groups presented their ideas for what the funds could be used for.

Mary Anne Cox, PhD, has worked more than 40 years in education in the area and urged council members to support youth programs.

Other ideas called for a multi-use sports facility, a community swimming pool, and funding for the arts.
