Thousands attend funeral for BART officer killed on duty

CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - Thousands of police officers were among the mourners attending the funeral of a San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit officer who was shot and killed by a fellow officer.

With bagpipes humming, officers from as far away as Massachusetts saluted the U.S. flag-draped casket of BART police Sgt. Tom Smith before services at the Neighborhood Church of Castro Valley.

The 23-year veteran was the first officer killed in the line of duty in the transit agency's history.

State Attorney General Kamala Harris told Smith's 6-year-old daughter during the service that "Your dad is a hero."

BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey tearfully said that Smith will never be forgotten.

The 42-year-old Smith died on Jan. 21 after being shot by fellow BART officer Michael Maes during an apartment search in Dublin.
