Police now say that she's a 33-year-old woman from Virginia, but they are not releasing her name because it's possible she's the victim of a crime. (April 6, 2017)

Fresno police have positively identified a woman who was found wandering in the middle of an intersection mostly naked Tuesday.

The woman, now identified as a 33-year-old from Virginia, answered most questions with “I don’t know” and referred to herself as a mermaid named “Joanna." She also said she had recently been in the water, police said.

“Joanna” was found walking in the middle of the street on Millerton Road, about a mile south of Table Mountain Casino near the intersection of Millerton and Brighton Crest Drive, across from the Eagle Spring Golf & Country Club.

On Wednesday afternoon, detectives received a tip and spoke with a relative of the woman who lives out of the area. Detectives learned that the woman made travel arrangements and flew to Fresno last week. She was visiting to see if Fresno was an area she may want to move to one day, according to the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner's Office

Detectives continue to investigate the incident and any contacts the woman made during her time in Fresno County. Arrangements are being made to reunite her with family and friends, authorities say.

The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner's Office did not release the name of the woman.
