Baylor bound Aquira DeCosta, St. Mary's hoops headline fall signing day

Aquira DeCosta, the star of the St. Mary's Rams women's basketball program, as well as one of the top recruits in the country, talks to ABC10's Sean Cunningham about signing her letter of intent with the Baylor Bears.

Aquira DeCosta and two of her St. Mary’s Rams teammates from the girls basketball program in Stockton headlined a fall signing ceremony in Stockton on Wednesday.

DeCosta, who is entering her senior year at St. Mary’s High School, was flanked by teammates Ariel Johnson and Neenah Young in the school’s library, alongside nine other student athletes who were all signing their national letters of intent.

For DeCosta, one of the nation’s top recruits, putting pen to paper to accept a full-ride athletic scholarship to play college basketball fulfilled a life-long dream.

“It’s exciting, but I was nervous,” DeCosta told ABC10, after signing with Baylor University in Waco, Texas. “It’s truly a blessing; I’m so excited to be a part of the Baylor family and I can’t wait to get there next year.”

The 6-foot-2 DeCosta is considered one of the nation’s top hoops phenoms of the 2018 class. ESPN ranked her fourth in the HoopGurlz top 100.

“I think she’s the best player in the country, and I’ve seen the best,” said St. Mary’s head coach Tom Gonsalves, who has guided the Rams to seven of their eight CIF state championships – the most for any coach in California. “The special athletes can go to another level. Well, she has that.”

Johnson inked her letter of intent to take her talents to the University of Florida to play with the Gators, and Young will head to the Ivy League after signing with Princeton.

Joining the Lady Rams hoop starts and also participating in Wednesday’s fall signing day were:

  • Tyler Lorenzo – USC (baseball)
  • Christian Almanzah – Utah (baseball)
  • Kiana Parrish – Cal State Fullerton (softball)
  • Carley Morfey -  San Jose State (softball)
  • Abigail Parises – Univeristy of Tennessee at Chattanooga (softball)
  • Miranda Padilla – Pacific (swimming)
  • Hailey Williams – UC Davis (water polo)
