Tardy, Lee among first-round winners at Girls Junior

Fort Wayne, IN (Sports Network) - Stroke-play medalist Bailey Tardy and defending champion Minjee Lee both won their first-round matches on Wednesday at the U.S. Girls' Junior Championship.

Tardy earned a hard-fought 1-up win over Abbey Carlson. Lee cruised to a 5 & 4 victory over Kaitlyn Papp at Sycamore Hills Golf Club.

Carlson was 2-down after two holes, but won three of the next four holes to grab the lead. Tardy came back with wins at seven and eight to regain a 1-up lead.

Around the turn, Carlson went 2-up for the first time as she won 12 and 13. Tardy birdied the 15th to get within 1-down. Tardy parred the 17th and 18th, and that was good enough to give her a 1-up win.

"Today was really hard. I was happy she won the playoff, but it was really sad that we had to play each other and one of us was going to get beat," said Tardy, who was teammates with Carlson earlier this month at the Wyndham Cup.

Lee, who hails from Australia, and Papp were even through six holes. Papp bogeyed the seventh and eighth to fall 2-down. Lee birdied the ninth to take a 3-up lead to the back nine. At the 13th and 14th, Lee only needed pars to win the holes, and claimed the match.

Yueer Feng, a quarterfinalist last year, rolled to the biggest win of the day as she trounced Dana Gattone, 7 & 6.

Cheyenne Knight ousted Danielle Lee by a 6 & 4 margin, while Kristen Gillman, Hannah O'Sullivan and Pauline Del Rosario all cruised to 6 & 5 wins.
