Elk Grove's Derek Hill drafted by Detroit Tigers in 1st round

The Tigers selected Elk Grove (Calif.) High School outfielder Derek Hill with the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the Major League Baseball first-year draft on Thursday night.

Hill is a cousin of former MLB star Darryl Strawberry and son of current Dodgers scout Orsino Hill.

"He pretty much said, 'Good luck in the future and you're next in line,' " Hill said during an interview with MLB Network immediately after he was drafted, recalling a talk he had with Strawberry.

Hill, who was wearing a Tigers cap and jersey, also was asked which Tiger was his favorite.

"Torii Hunter, by far Torii Hunter," he said. "That's always been my favorite player."

Orsino Hill was also an outfielder and was drafted in the first round of the 1982 January phase of the draft.

Derek Hill (6-foot-5, 185 pounds) is committed to Oregon. Baseball America called him the top defensive centerfielder in the draft class.
