Crews break ground on Cal Expo soccer stadium

SACRAMENTO - It may not be Old Trafford, heck it's not even the Stub Hub Center, but the Sacramento Republic Football Club are one step closer to having a stadium to call their own.

Construction crews began clearing way for the 8,000-seat, soccer specific stadium Tuesday morning. The facility, projected to cost around $3 million to build and two to three months to complete, will sit next to the Raging Waters waterpark on the Cal Expo grounds.

The team opens the 2014 USL Pro season against the Harrisburg City Islanders. They will play their home games at Sacramento City College's Hughes Stadium until the Cal Expo complex is built.

Nearly 4,800 season tickets have been sold as of Tuesday, leaving little more than 3,000 general tickets available for purchase each game.

Ovations Fanfare is funding the stadium.
