SACRAMENTO – Hazmat response units were called to Sylvan Middle School in Citrus Heights Thursday.
According San Juan School District spokesman Trent Allen, approximately 30 students and a teacher in a classroom were complaining of feeling ill.
Hazmat and Sacramento Metro paramedics reported the students were experiencing symptoms consistent with exposure to some kind of irritant like pepper spray or cleaning products. Two students were taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. The other students went home with their parents.
"It just felt like dust in the back of my throat, and I was coughing really bad, and I felt dizzy," student Diana Vavrynyuk said.
The situation was isolated to one classroom.
The source of the problem had not been determined as of mid-afternoon.
Class will resume at the regular time Friday, authorities said.
