Forecast: Beautiful weather and then expect rain

Saturday promises to be a beautiful day.

High pressure continues to dominate much of the state, rewarding us with ample sunshine and, most notably, mild and unseasonable temperatures. High temperatures will remain near 70 through Tuesday, flirting near record highs.

However, big changes are in store for the middle of next week. An approaching storm system seems as if it won't disappoint. Weather models grow more and more consistent every day leaning toward a significant rain event that could span a few days. As of now, rain showers will enter the forecast late Wednesday with a rain/snow mix for the Sierra.

Expect to see widespread rainfall on Thursday morning, which will eventually taper off to showers later in the day.

Round 2 hits the coastline midday Friday with more rainfall likely. The ongoing chance of rain and snow showers will linger in the forecast Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

As far as rain totals, it's still pretty far out to speak with 100 percent certainty. However, some weather models are suggesting at least 2 inches for the Northern Sacramento Valley and foothills through Saturday morning. That could be a substantial amount of snowfall, depending on where it falls.

The latest model runs are suggesting the bulk of the event to average between 6,000 to 6,500 feet. In any event, what we do know is the chance of picking up some much needed rainfall is high.
