New satellite will measure rain and snow from space

The current drought is showing the importance of accurate forecasting for rain and snow accumulation.

New satellite technology will soon launch, bringing better information on how much and where rain and snow is falling.

NASA will launch the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory on Thursday, February 27. It will measure rain and snow throughout the world and give us more information on available fresh water.

The key component is an advanced radar/radiometer system. This measures precipitation from space.

The satellite will also provide better information during hurricanes and floods as well as how water cycles around Earth during climate changes.
