Caregiver convicted of stealing $100K from veteran with dementia in Placer County

The victim's friend discovered the theft and reported it to law enforcement, according to Placer PROTECT.

PLACER COUNTY, Calif. — A caregiver was convicted of stealing more than $100,000 from a person with dementia in Placer County, according to Placer PROTECT.

Placer PROTECT is a team established by the Placer County District Attorney's Office consisting of trained staff dedicated to elder abuse investigations, victim support and awareness.

A caregiver was convicted March 6 of stealing more than $100,000 from a veteran with dementia. The victim's friend discovered the theft and reported it to law enforcement, according to Placer PROTECT.

Signs of Financial Abuse

Placer PROTECT has these signs of financial abuse to look out for.

  • Unusual financial purchases
  • Diversion of mail or bank statements
  • Unfamiliar signatures on checks
  • Missing personal belongings, papers, credit cards, jewelry, prescription medications
  • Improper or extravagant use of a legal document, like a power of attorney
