'Avengers: Endgame' hinges on Sacramento area talent

From the Avengers' screenplay to its heroes, there are critical players from the Sacramento area involved in Marvel's finale to Phase 3.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The ensemble cast of the Avengers has always been ambitiously large, but the franchise has no shortage of Sacramento area talent featured in Avengers: Endgame.

Here are the Sacramento area natives that are bringing Avengers: Endgame to the silver screen:

Modesto's Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye

Technically, Jeremey Renner is the area’s first Avenger. His debut was a cameo appearance in “Thor.” He was also one of the original Avengers who battled Loki in the first movie and, later, Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Renner was born in Modesto, graduating from Beyer High School and attended Modesto Junior College. He studied computer science, criminology, and psychology before exploring theater. In a 2015 Extra Butter interview, he even refers to Sacramento as his "old stomping grounds."

According to a 2014 Reddit AMA, his first acting gig on film was on National Lampoon's Senior Trip, but his first paid acting gig was at a police academy.

He said in the Reddit forum that the police academy asked the acting school to help with creating scenarios for cadets, for which he was paid $100.

Sacramento's Brie Larson as Captain Marvel

Brie Larson helped bring Captain Marvel to the silver screen. Larson is a newer addition to the Avengers cast, and, her roots are tied to Sacramento. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel comes before "Iron Man" in the timeline, but she'll make her Avengers debuts in Avengers: Endgame.

In a 2013 Reddit AMA, she talked about how acting was something she wanted to do from a young age.

“When I was 3 I went up to my mom while she was doing dishes and said 'Mom, I know what my dharma is – I’m supposed to be an actor,'" Larson wrote in the Reddit forum.

According to ABC News, Larson was the youngest student ever admitted the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and she is recognized as a distinguished alumna along with other celebrities like Winona Ryder and Zendaya.

UC Davis' Christopher Markus and Steven McFeely

The UC Davis graduates are known as the screenwriters behind every Captain America movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They're also responsible for Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.

According to UC Davis, the duo aspired to be novelists when they started the UC Davis creative writing graduate program, which is where they first met.

“We met in Grad School (fiction writing). It was either this or starve,” wrote McFeely in a 2014 Reddit AMA regarding why they chose to work together.

McFeely told the UC Davis magazine that they couldn’t see how they could make book writing a full-time job, so they decided to write for Hollywood.

In the cinematic world of Marvel, they were screenwriters for:

  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame
