Sacramento County Fair returns with comedy, illusions, new food for 2019 | Need to Know

The Sacramento County Fair, held at Cal Expo, prides itself as a value-added fair. Kids under the age of 12 get in for free and have access to more than 100 free things to see and do.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — While the Sacramento County Fair might share the same stage as the California State Fair, organizers said they take every effort to create a unique family experience for visitors.

“We might share the same city, but we’re a completely different fair. We’re a very value-added family-friendly fair," said Pamela Fyock, CEO of the Sacramento County Fair. “It’s a great opportunity for them to come out and experience one of the best fairs in the country at a low value."

The 2019 Sacramento County Fair will bring back old favorites and new features for its four-day run from May 23 to May 27.

WHAT'S NEW AT THE FAIR?

Fan favorite entertainment like the Midway of Fun carnival and fair foods will return, but here are some new things to enjoy:

  • Extreme Dogs (an extreme stunt show with dogs)
  • Murray Hatfield & Teresa (World class illusionists)
  • The Magic Bean (Interactive show on how food goes from farm to table)
  • Alfred & Seymour (Comedy duo)
  • Randy Cabral Comedy Juggler

The Sacramento County Fair will play host to beloved rodeo shows.

In addition to some new events, some new vendors will be dropping by as well. Guests will see new options for Chinese food, chicken and waffles, and fruit, and familiar vendors will be returning a new food item for the fair.

There will even be options for deep fried chicken skins and cotton candy tacos.

FUN FOR THE KIDS

There will be plenty of events and features for all ages, but the fair has taken efforts to make spaces that cater just to kids as well. That includes:

  • Sunflower Saddle Ranch – This area focuses on agricultural education for a taste of the farm life.
  • Great American Duck Races – Children and adults are chosen during the show to release ducks onto the race track as they cheer them on.
  • Great American Petting Farm – It’s a no-barrier enclosure where kids can spend hours with 55 animals.
  • PJ Masks meet and greet – The characters of the PJ Masks superhero show will be around the fair for photos with kids and their families.

WHAT'S THE COST?

The cost of a ticket at the gate is $8 for an adult. For kids, Sacramento County Fair considers every day of its operation a "Kids Day," so kids 12 and under can get in for free any day of the week.

“It doesn’t matter to us what day of the week you come,” Fyock said. “We want to bring these kids in, educate them on the benefits of agriculture, and where their food comes from.”

Parking will be $10. Presale deals and online purchases for the fair are available here.

WHERE AND WHEN?

The Sacramento County Fair operates from May 23 to May 27 and runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. On Memorial Day, they'll run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

You can find the fair at Cal Expo (1600 Exposition Boulevard) in Sacramento. Vehicles can enter through Gate D at Exposition Blvd and Challenge Way. Gate admission will be at the entrance to the Cal Expo Rodeo Arena.
