WHY GUY: Does Sacramento have a city flag?

Some cities have cool flags. Sacramento, on the other hand, does not. Why is that?

Leo, I was recently in Chicago and yes, it does have a cool flag.

As for Sacramento, we went out looking for the city flag. In Old Sacramento, we found no city flag a'flyin'. Downtown at J and Third Street, the Holiday Inn has three flagpoles and on one of the poles, they're flying their own hotel flag, not the city's.

But, there's got to be a city flag at City Hall, right?

No.

A city staffer had to find one to show us what it looks like. It’s a seldom seen blue and white flag that’s been the official flag since 1989. We spoke to Carlos Eliason, Creative Specialist for Sacramento, about why nobody flies the Sacramento flag.

"You could say that I suppose it's in disuse right now," Eliason said.

Disuse? I love that term! The flag is in disuse! It needs a home!

"It needs a home," Eliason said. "Rather, I should say it has a home, but some would say we need a new flag."

The two city organizations that helped create this flag and fly it are no longer in existence. So, it's literally drifting in no wind.

So what happened to the original 1964 City of Sacramento flag? The last two are left under lock and key at the Sacramento History Center. This flag was used until 1989, then abandoned after people complained that it was ugly, according to Marcia Eymann, Executive Director of the Sacramento History Center.

So, it's apparently it's on all of us to start a movement to get a new flag designed and get it flying.
