Celebrating unusual pets on National Pet Day

Our animal friends help us live happier, healthier lives -- so, it's only right that they get a special day to be celebrated!

April 11th is National Pet Day, and we know what you're thinking: "How is this any different than National Dog Day or National Cat Day?"

Well, it's not that different. Except this day gives us a chance to shed light on animals you might not consider when you're picking out your next pet.

Check out all of the unusual pets our ABC10 Facebook fans shared with us!

There's also some cuddly critters you aren't legally allowed to own as pets in the state of California, including hedgehogs, ferrets and gerbils, that's because these animals are not native to the state.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife prohibits possession of non-native animals because they could pose a health and/or safety threat when introduced native species.
