Vacaville Police officers complete food delivery after responding to car crash

The officers were responding to a crash scene when they spotted the Door Dash package sitting in the passenger floorboard of one of the wrecked vehicles.

VACAVILLE, Calif — Vacaville Police officers went ran an unexpected errand after cleaning up from a car accident on Halloween night.

It turns out, one of the drivers involved in the crash was a Door Dash delivery driver and he was on his way to drop off food.

"I went to the car to help get registration information for Alan's car and noted there was a Door Dash package on the passenger's seat. Actually, it was on the floor because it had spilled," said Vacaville Police Sgt. David Spencer.

Alan was on his way to deliver food through Door Dash when police say someone ran a red light and slammed into his car. He was OK but still had to go to the hospital after hitting his head pretty hard.

That's where Spencer comes in.

"That's the first thing that came to my mind, is this guy is trying to work and finish a delivery when he was struck in [the] intersection. And so it kind of came second nature that my guys had no heartburn about it. They grabbed it and went and got it to him before it got cold," he said.

Without hesitation, two Vacaville Police officers grabbed the food and took off to deliver it.

"He didn't answer the door right away, and it took a couple minutes but when he did, he was surprised," said Officer Daniel Stoddard.

The person on the receiving end of the food was a good sport about it, even posing for a photo with the officers, his delivery in hand.

"Not your typical law enforcement interaction," Stoddard said.

It didn't take long before Door Dash caught wind of the good deed.

"They asked us what was a restaurant we wanted. They wanted to bring us dinner to say ‘thanks’ for helping out one of their guys," he said.

Door Dash rewarded the entire patrol team with a dinner of their choice before they hit the streets last Thursday night.

"Most of our contact with people is usually for bad things, accidents, stuff like that. But this [was] an opportunity to do something cool for somebody, do something that was unexpected. We don't normally get to do stuff like that," he said.
