High School Program broadening horizons for students' futures

A lot of high school seniors are getting ready for what's next. Whether it's college, the military or even a 9 to 5 - there are a lot of options to consider. But where do students even get started?

SACRAMENTO, California — A lot of high school seniors are getting ready for what's next.

Whether it's college, the military or even a 9 to 5 job, there are a lot of options to consider. But where should students get started?

A group at Inderkum High School started a program they say may be the road map students all across the country could use.

Elisabeth Kutek says what makes Inderkum's College and Career Readiness Program a hit with student is it's students working for other students.

"We're on media and on camera, using podcasts and using websites to basically use websites to sell college to students making it as easy as possible," Kutek said.

So, just how successful is it? Well, Kutek is now a sophomore at Georgetown. But her options expanded from the local community college because of the program.

"And that's where I found Howard, hat's where I found Georgetown, hat's where I found Penn,  so many different options to choose from," Kutek said.

And it's not just Kutek who succeeded with help from the program. Meet Sophie Getahoun. She worked with Inderkum's program and now she's at UC Berkley.

"Going from a public high school going to the number one public university in the world, [College and Career Readiness Program] balances the playing field," Getahoun said.

So how did CCR work for them and other students in general?

"We talk to college recruiters, professionals in different industries and they just talk to students about how they can follow different pathways," Getahoun said. "I got to meet people. Meet professionals and get a chance to know that I could be like them, too."

Jamel Pugh, the College and Career Readiness Specialist teacher at Inderkum says the program is a God-send for him, too.

"There's 2,300 students at Inderkum and there's only one of me, so it's really hard to interact with that many students and make myself available," Pugh said.

Kutek says college was the path for her, but they understand college isn't for everybody.

"That's why we work with the military," Kutek said. "That's why we work with Fredericko Beauty Institute and all of those different things so that you can choose the pathway that's best for you."

The College and Career Readiness Program has only been around for three years.
