Holiday recipe: Grammie’s Christmas Wreaths

9NEWS Research Director Kitty DeLio makes these Christmas wreaths every year with her family as a tribute to their 'Grammie.'

Every Christmas, my Grammie would make her Christmas wreaths and mail a package of them to each of her ten grandchildren.

Now, my sisters, daughters, cousins, nieces and nephews make them every year as a special way to remember our Grammie.

It takes all of us to get them on the paper and shaped into holly berries. We cannot figure out how she did it alone.


  • ½ cup butter
  • 30 large marshmallows, or 8 cups of small ones (1 large bag of marshmallows has at least 30)
  • ½ tsp blue food coloring
  • 1 tsp green food coloring
  • 4 cups Special K Cereal
  • Red hots (small jar from baking decorations)
  • Sugar art sprinkles red and green (optional)


  1. Heat marshmallows in a large nonstick pan on low heat. Stir until smooth.
  2. Add blue food coloring, green food coloring and Special K Cereal. Mix until the cereal is covered with green mixture.
  3. Grease hands and a spoon with butter. Spoon out about a serving spoon size of the mixture. Form into round balls or drop a clump of the mixture on parchment paper (or wax paper).
  4. Press finger in the middle and shape into wreath.
  5. Add red hots to look like holly berries.
  6. Lightly sprinkle some of the Sugar Art green and/or red sugar onto the wreaths.

You need to move quickly so the mixture does not set in the pan. Once on the paper and shaped, let sit until firm. Leave wreaths on paper and cut around the wreath and stack in a container for storage.
