Skipping Black Friday? Small Business Saturday is your perfect holiday shopping alternative

Skip the lines and stampedes. Small Business Saturday focuses on supporting local businesses in your community.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Black Friday falls on the day after Thanksgiving every year.

And every year, it spells chaos. There's tents set up outside of stores, a stampede of ravenous consumers, and violent fights. So many fights. The American holiday has been the busiest shopping day of the year for decades. Retailers roll out numerous discounts and promotions, activating Black Friday as the beginning to the holiday gift-giving season.

However, if you're looking to skip the long lines and chaos this year, you're not alone. Many consumers are stepping back from the hustle and bustle of Black Friday and turning to alternative experiences.

Small Business Saturday, which focuses on shopping small in your own community, is the perfect way to get your holiday shopping done early while supporting small, local businesses.

Small Business Saturday is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2019. As a way to kick off the holiday season, small businesses open their doors the Saturday after Thanksgiving with special deals and sales. Backed by American Express since 2010, the holiday strays from Black Friday's emphasis on big retail stores and corporations and encourages you to shop local and small instead.

This directly helps your local economy, too! An average of $0.67 of every dollar spent at a local business stays in that local community. Some money gets cycled back into your neighborhood, through contributing to other small businesses, taxes, etc. Over the years, Small Business Saturday spending has reportedly reached over $100 billion since the day began; that’s an estimated $67 billion circulating throughout local communities even after the weekend is done.

Here are just some of the events and stores that will be participating in Small Business Saturday in Sacramento. Sacramento Regional Transit is offering a free shopping shuttle to help you get around to your favorite local businesses.

Midtown

This is by no means a comprehensive list, and we encourage you to explore Sacramento and surrounding cities on Small Business Saturday to see what other deals you find. Thousands of stores are expected to participate across the country this weekend. Check with your local neighborhood Chamber of Commerce to see what deals and events are happening in your neighborhood.
