Dine Downtown raising money for food literacy

SACRAMENTO - Thousands of people are expected to flock to the Capitol City beginning Wednesday to take part in the 9th annual Dine Downtown event.

SACRAMENTO - Thousands of people are expected to flock to the Capitol City beginning Wednesday to take part in the 9th annual Dine Downtown event.

More than 25 restaurants plan to offer a special three-course menu for $31 during the event, which continues through Jan. 17. The promotion is coordinated by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership.

"It's a great time to come out and not have to spend a lot of money," Ten22 Executive Chef Jay Veregge said. "If you're going to go out and do something anyway, it might as well be a value."

One dollar from every Dine Downtown meal that is sold will go to the California Food Literacy Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring change in community food education.

"We're so excited by the support of the restaurant community," California Food Literacy Center Executive Director Amber Stott said. "They really understand our mission of teaching kids how to cook, and where their food comes from, and nutrition."

Organizers said the event generates more than $1 million in restaurant sales and parking revenue, providing businesses a huge boost at the start of the new year.

"We do very well these next couple of weeks with new diners especially and then verbal diners," Veregge said. "You'll see a lot of people who like to come in and like to Yelp, they like OpenTable, they like to talk about their experience."
