New vacation option targets craft beer lovers

Small ship adventure line Un-Cruise Adventures is hoping to tap the craft beer movement with a new beer-themed voyage out of Seattle.

Small ship adventure line Un-Cruise Adventures is hoping to tap the craft beer movement with a new beer-themed voyage out of Seattle.

The one-week sailing on the 60-passenger Wilderness Adventurer will kick off on May 3 and combine an adventurous exploration of Washington's whale-filled Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands with nightly beer tastings with experts on the Seattle beer scene.

Un-Cruise says Seattle beer aficionados Kendall Jones and Kim Sharpe from the Washington Beer Commission will lead the tastings of local craft beers and match beers with each night's meals. The duo also have brewed a special ale with the region's Schooner Exact Brewing Company that will be on tap on the ship throughout the voyage.

Two brewery tours and tastings also are on the schedule during a stop at Orcas Island at Port Townsend Brewing and Island Hoppin Brewery.

The trip will take in Washington's Puget Sound and Salish Sea from South Hood Canal to Olympic National Park and the San Juan Islands.

Un-Cruise says the ship will search for the wildlife of the area including Gray whales, orcas, seals, sea lions and bald eagles. Other highlights include hiking in Olympic National Park, Mt. Constitution State Park and Washington State Park. Waterborne expeditions by kayaks, skiffs and paddle boards will explore glacial fjords and the San Juan archipelago. In Quilcene Bay, a local family will host a home-grown oyster and clam tasting.

Fares for the sailing start at $1,895 per person, based on double occupancy, including all meals, beer tastings, transfers and adventure activities. The line also is offering a $100 per couple discount for customers who book by Feb. 28.
