Begley's Bargains: 3 sneaky ways you are overspending on store 'deals'

Those sales prices and deals may look enticing, but they might not be all that they seem. In this week's Begley's Bargains, Brittany looks at three money pit tricks.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In this week’s Begley's Bargains, let’s talk about three sneaky ways we are overspending our money with store deals and so-called “sales”.

1. BOGO

Buy one get one free is a great deal if you actually need two of the item, but often you can get just one for half the price. This is the real way to take advantage of these kind of sales.

2. Store Cards

Some stores offer great discounts if you open up a credit card with them. But here is the deal, those cards really don't save you money unless you pay them off right away. Target's Red card has an interest rate of 24.4% and Walmart's card has an interest rate that ranges from 17% to 24%. So, while you save about 5% at checkout, you could pay more than triple that price in interest if you don't pay off that debt.

3. Sale Price

Make sure you double-check sale prices for the best price. For example, my friend thought he was getting a great deal on a camera bag for $181. Thankfully, he double-checked the price on Amazon and found the same bag for $81! You can also use websites like Camel, Camel, Camel to also double check sale prices and ensure you're getting the best deal.
