Begley's Bargains: How to properly store your food

If you're storing your food wrong, you're wasting your money by letting food go to waste.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — There's an old saying, “an apple a day will keep the Doctor away."

Unless, of course, it's store improperly and becomes rotten, then you're wasting your money.

So, this Begley's Bargains is all about saving you money at the grocery store. Let's start with those apples. Should you store them in the fridge or leave them out on the counter?

When I asked my Facebook friends the same question, 52 percent said they leave them on the counter. According to Reader's Digest, if you want them to last longer, you should store apples in your fridge.

Now let's talk about your fruit and veggies. Can they live happily ever after when stored together in the fridge?

My Twitter followers said it's not a good idea to pear them together. Because of the different gases emitted by fruits and vegetables, storing them together causes them to deteriorate faster.

Now let's get to the meat of the story, how long can you keep red meat in the fridge? If the red meat is raw, the max is five days, but if it's leftovers, no more than four days. If you're freezing your meat, if could last up to one year .
