Begley's Bargains: Cutting the cord to savings

From libraries to antennas, there's ways to watch your favorite shows without spending and arm and a leg for cable.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — If you’re looking to cut the cord and ditch cable TV to save money, there are some options that can really save you some dough!

First, the best cost-saving tip I can give is to get a library card. Libraries are more than just books these days. With a library card, you can watch some of your favorite TV shows and movies for free without ads. Simply download Hoopla onto your smart phone or tablet, and you'll have access to popular movies television shows, and music from current artists. Another helpful app for indie movies and documentaries is Kanopy, which has access to over 30,000 movies, including the Sacramento-based "Ladybird."

Digital TV antennas have also come a long way since the rabbit ears your Grandma used to have that only picked up three channels. Buy a digital antenna for around $25 and watch some of your favorite TV shows for free.

If you want cable television without cable prices, Consumer Reports suggests Google Chromecast as the best streaming device for easy set-up and high picture quality.
