Local museums could be a stealthy way to find gifts this holiday season

Some local museum stores are offering discounts in an effort to boost sales as we head into the second holiday season amid the pandemic.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In a partnership with the international nonprofit Museum Store Association, a group of more than 30 museum stores in and around Sacramento are pooling their efforts to hit the ground running this holiday season.

Collectively known as the Sacramento Area Museums, the museum stores and gift shops are showcasing a broad assortment of curated and specialized gifts.

All independently operated stores inside museums, zoos, aquariums, historic sites and other local cultural institutions are participating in the fifth annual "Museum Store Sunday."

As we enter the second holiday season where local businesses are facing hard times because of the pandemic, Museum Store Sunday takes on a deeper meaning for many museum stores across Sacramento.

Some stores are also offering discounts to entice people who routinely walk past gift shops.

"On Sunday November 28, you can help support us by visiting our store located in the State Indian Museum," the California Indian Heritage Center Foundation said in a Facebook post. "We offer a wide-range of arts and crafts made by local Native artists, an extensive collection of books on Native topics, and so much more."

Other museums with participating stores include the Aerospace Museum of California, the California State Railroad Museum, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park and more.
