Sacramento Children's Museum helps kids get off the electronics, into environment for Earth Day

Molly Mix, the Sacramento Children's Museum Interim Director of Education, has 4 tips to help get kids off the electronics and into the environment.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Molly Mix the Interim Director of Education says making learning fun will help get children off the electronic devices and interested in learning about the environment.

“They are our future, so we definitely want them feeling ownership and responsibility in keeping the earth clean and ready for the next generation," said Mix.

Many parents celebrated Earth Day by taking their children to the Sacramento Children’s Museum, which held a free admission day full of outdoor learning activities.

Here are four tips she says could help get a child off their electronics and engaged with the environment:

1. Hands on Activities

“There has to be some a hands-on component where they can, literally, be making something or doing something and, while they are doing that, [you] go ahead and slip in the educational components of it,” Mix suggested.

2. Include Music and Games

“Have kids’ music in the background [and] make it bright and colorful. Have hula-hoops and things like that, so it’s kind of a mix fun and educational,” she added.

3. Taking them on a field trip

“Take them somewhere like the Folsom Zoo where they have rescue animals and talk to them about how important it is to have animal habitats,” said Mix.

4. Community Involvement

“Take them to go pick up garbage along the American River Parkway and talk about how it affects the ecosystem there when garbage gets into the waterways,” Mix said.
