Father of 5-year-old found dead in Sacramento storage unit appears in court

Tyler and Averyauna Anderson have been arrested after police say they found their 5-year-old child's body inside of a storage unit in Sacramento.

Released court documents of a Reno Police Department officer's affidavit identify 5-year-old Cali Anderson as the victim whose body was found in a Sacramento storage unit at the 1800 block of Glenrose Ave on May 15.

The document states that Cali was dead for about two weeks before her body was found.

According to the affidavit, a witness who claimed to be a friend of Tyler Anderson, Cali’s biological father, called Sacramento police officers around 11 p.m. on May 15.

The witness told police that he was contacted on May 11 by Anderson, whom asked if he could store some items at the witness' storage unit. The witness agreed and watched Anderson place several boxes in the storage unit that day.

The witness was later contacted by Anderson again on May 14 to store more boxes. But when the witness met with Anderson on May 15, he felt some of the new items were suspicious and went back to the unit alone later in the day.

The witness called Sacramento Police after he reportedly found a box in his storage unit that contained a plastic drum with a duffel bag inside of it with what appeared to be decomposing remains of a child.

On May 16, Sacramento police arrested Tyler Anderson on manslaughter charges and was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. Sacramento police then began a joint investigation with the Reno Police Department after discovering Tyler rented a U-Haul van on May 10 from a location in Reno, Nevada.

Officers located the residence of Tyler and his wife Averyauna Anderson, whom is not Cali’s biological mother.

The officer described the scene of the Anderson's apartment as dirty and unkempt with spoiled food, stains, and old mattresses all over the residence.

The Reno police then placed Averyauna under arrest on charges of child neglect causing bodily harm. The document also states that the Sacramento Coroner’s report of the toddler showed that she appeared to be emaciated.

The document says when questioned, Averyauna claims she and Tyler found Cali unresponsive on one of their mattress. They attempted to perform CPR but did not attempt to contact emergency services or law enforcement. The officer reports that the Andersons realized Cali was dead, changed her clothes and placed her in a duffel bag.

Tyler and Averyauna have two additional children, who were taken into child protective services.

On Monday, Tyler appeared in court and signed extradition papers. He will be sent back to Reno in the next week or two to face more charges. His next court date will be June 20.
