2 correctional officers in Stockton hurt after alleged inmate attack

Officials say the incident is being investigated as an attempted homicide.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Two officers are recovering at home after being cut by an inmate in what investigators say was an attempted homicide.

Officials with the California Health Care Facility, an institution that provides medical and mental health care to inmates with severe and long-term needs, say Francisco Gutierrez Jr., 31, attacked two correctional officers Friday afternoon in one of the housing units.

Officers had to use physical force to stop Gutierrez Jr., officials said.

The two officers ended up with cuts from the attack and were taken to the hospital. Both were eventually released and are now recovering at home. An inmate-made weapon was also found at the scene.

Gutierrez Jr., had minor injuries and was treated at the institution. Authorities say he'll be moved to another institution and rehoused in an administrative segregation unit.

The California Health Care Facility received Gutierrez Jr. in 2013 from Los Angeles County to serve a life sentence with the possibility for parole for first-degree murder as a second-striker, intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury/death, and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon with a street gang enhancement.

Gutierrez also had an additional four-year sentence from Kern County in 2018 for possessing and making a deadly weapon while in prison.
