9-year-old killed in alleged DUI collision

Police say the alleged drunk driver blew through a red light before hitting the vehicle.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A two vehicle collision involving an alleged drunk driver early Sunday resulted in the death of a 9 year old.

Officer Mike Zerfas, a spokesperson with the North Sacramento California Highway Patrol, said that the collision occurred on Bell Street and Marconi Avenue around 1:36 a.m. on March 17.

A driver and his 9-year-old son were heading westbound in a Toyota Corolla on Marconi Ave. when the vehicle was allegedly sideswiped by a suspect in a SUV Infinity on southbound Bell Street. 

The driver in the Toyota was said to have major injuries, but the 9-year-old passenger was killed. Police say the alleged drunk driver had blown through a red light before hitting the vehicle.

The suspect fled but was eventually caught. He was charged with felony hit and run, DUI, and murder.
