Update: 3:00 p.m. (Dec. 17)

Two Sacramento sheriff deputies were part of an officer involved shooting being investigated by the Sacramento Police Department.

According to Sacramento Sheriff spokesman Shaun Hampton, deputies had been conducting surveillance on a theft suspect from a neighboring jurisdiction.

Sgt. Hampton said the suspect had a "$1 million warrant for his arrest pertaining to the crimes in the neighboring jurisdiction. He also has an extensive criminal history as well as being a parolee at large from California State prison system."

On Saturday, Dec.15, officers from the neighboring jurisdiction performed a traffic stop on theft suspects, but, during the traffic stop, officers noticed that the backseat passenger had a handgun.

According to Sgt. Hampton, words were exchanged between the officers and the suspect, and then the suspect pointed the gun at himself and jumped into the driver's seat.

The suspect drove away with officers pursuing. Sgt. Hampton said that, with the driver both possessing a handgun and driving erratically, officers discontinued the pursuit due it becoming unsafe.

After the agency investigated and identified the suspect, they asked for help from the Sacramento Sheriff's office to locate him. Surveillance helped the sheriff's office locate the suspect in a parking lot, located on the 2800 block of Truxel Road.

Two deputies tried to make contact with the suspect, who was a passenger in the vehicle at the time, and according to Sacramento Police Sgt. Vance Chandler, the suspect exited the vehicle and posed an immediate threat to deputies.

"Both deputies fired their weapons, and we do know that the suspect had a holster and was also armed with a firearm," said Sgt. Chandler, adding that a firearm was recovered close to the vehicle.

Deputies attempted to provide life saving measures, however, the suspect would succumb to his injuries. Other deputies had responded to the area to assist.

The shooting investigation is still active and is being handled by the Sacramento Police Department.
