Alleged DUI driver arrested in Arden-Arcade collision that killed 9-year-old boy

According to CHP, a 36-year-old Sacramento man and a 9-year-boy were travelling westbound on Marconi Avenue toward Bell Street when Zaragoza Jr. ran a and crashed into the other car.

ARDEN-ARCADE, Calif. — California Highway Patrol arrested a Roseville man on multiple charges related to a Sunday morning accident in the Arden-Arcade that killed a 9-year-old boy.

Rene Zaragoza Jr. was arrested on multiple charges relating to the collision, which included murder, hit-and-run causing injury or death, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury or death, and failure to have an ignition interlock device.

Officers responded to a traffic accident March 17 around 1:35 a.m. at Marconi Avenue and Bell Street. According to CHP, a 36-year-old Sacramento man and a 9-year-boy were travelling westbound on Marconi Avenue toward Bell Street when Zaragoza Jr. ran a and crashed into the other car.

Zaragoza Jr. fled the scene of the collision. 

The 36-year-old and 9-year-old were transported to a hospital with major injuries. The 9-year-old boy was later pronounced dead. The condition of the man is unknown.

Zaragoza Jr. was later arrested at his home and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail after getting treated for minor injuries.
