Auburn man accused of decapitating family dog

Authorities say they were called out to the home after family members said the suspect, 31-year-old Christopher Dougherty, told them he had killed their 3-year-old Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix, Milo.

AUBURN, Calif. -- An Auburn man was arrested after allegedly decapitating his family’s small dog.

It happened on Thursday. Authorities say they were called out to the home after family members said the suspect, 31-year-old Christopher Dougherty, told them he had killed their 3-year-old Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix, Milo.

When deputies arrived at the home they say they found Dougherty covered in blood and holding a knife that appeared to have white dog fur clinging to the blade.

At the time, the deputies could not find Milo, but were told by family members that there was a rug missing from the home.

Based on evidence at the scene, Dougherty was placed under arrest. Later, a deputy made the gruesome discovery inside a trashcan just outside of the home. According to the report, Milo had been completely decapitated, wrapped in the rug and thrown in the trash.

Dougherty was booked into the Placer County Jail on a complaint of animal cruelty. Detail on a possible bond were not released.
