Bakersfield man killed by exploding fireworks

Investigators say 45-year-old David Michael Adams was “using illegal fireworks in an unsafe manner” when the explosion happened.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A man was killed in a fireworks explosion in Bakersfield, Friday night.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was called out just before 10 p.m. following an explosion at a home in the 400 block of Ray Street, just to the east of the Meadows Field Airport.

Investigators say 45-year-old David Michael Adams was “using illegal fireworks in an unsafe manner” when the explosion happened. Adams was critically injured in the blast and later died at the hospital.

The sheriff’s office did not say where Adams got the illegal fireworks, nor did they say what type of fireworks he was using. No other injuries were reported.

The bomb squad is still investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 661-861-3110.
