ELK GROVE, Calif — A Sacramento Municipal Utility Vehicle (SMUD) was carjacked in Elk Grove, Friday afternoon.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle, a full-size SMUD pickup with a boom lift, was taken near Waterman Road and Grant Line Road after the carjacker assaulted a SMUD employee.
Sheriff’s deputies, along with Elk Grove Police officers, chased after the vehicle into the Wilton area. Investigators tell ABC10 the carjacker drove recklessly through fields and residential yards, destroying fences and gates in the process.
During the chase, authorities say the carjacker charged head-on at several law enforcement vehicles. During one such charge, an Elk Grove Police officer opened fire, however, no one was hit.
Later, a deputy successfully deployed spike strips disabling one of the SMUD vehicle’s tires.
Investigators say, when the carjacker tried to turn northbound onto Highway 99 from Dillard Road, he lost control of the vehicle, crashed into the ditch, and was soon arrested.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the chase. The carjacker suffered minor injuries from the crash. The condition of the SMUD employee is not known.
This is a developing story.
