CHP searching for driver after fatal hit and run on Hwy 50

Woodland California Highway Patrol said they are looking for the driver of the vehicle that fled the scene of the crash.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — UPDATE (April 12, 2019): 

California Highway Patrol of Woodland is still searching for the vehicle that fled the scene of the fatal collision Wednesday morning in West Sacramento.

Officers now believe that the vehicle involved was a white Honda Civic.

ORIGINAL STORY: 

One person is dead after a three-car crash in West Sacramento early Wednesday morning.

According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, just before 2 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, officers responded to westbound lanes along U.S. Route 50, just west of Harbor Blvd., for reports of a three-vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers found Chris Allen Courtney, 51, died after he was struck after he got out of his car. A second driver, Miguel Maldonado, 19, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

According to the CHP’s investigation, Courtney crashed his 2018 Maserati into the center median. Maldonado was also driving at the time and crashed after attempting to avoid hitting Courtney’s car.

After exiting his vehicle, Courtney was hit and killed by a third car trying to avoid his Maserati. That driver fled the scene. Little information is known at this time other than the vehicle is believed to be white with dark wheels.

CHP believes that Courtney was hit by this driver and died of injuries sustained at the scene of the crash. They are now searching for the driver and any witnesses to learn more about the crash. At this point in the investigation, CHP is unsure of what caused each collision or if alcohol or drugs were factors. Officer Fitzhugh said that at this time no arrests are to be made.
