Elk Grove police officers are investigating what they believe to be an apparent murder-suicide that happened just east of Interstate 5.
The incident occurred around 12:05 a.m. on Sunday.
Officers were dispatched after they received calls regarding a vehicle parked on the shoulder of the eastbound roadway. Calls indicated that a female adult was lying on the road next to the driver's door of the parked vehicle. Authorities add that a male adult was slumped over in the passenger's seat of the vehicle.
Both of the subjects had suffered gunshot wounds, according to police.
The female, needing immediate medical attention, was transported to a hospital, but the male was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers would later learn that the female subject passed away due to her injuries.
As police investigate, they are treating the investigation as an apparent murder-suicide based on statements from witnesses and physical evidence.
This is believed to be an isolated incident, and police are not searching for any suspects.
