Man believed to be holding large BBQ lighter shot at by Elk Grove police; no injuries reported

The Elk Grove Police Department has placed the officer who fired the shot on administrative leave.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — Update 1:15 p.m.

Police made contact with the man because he was walking down the street when they believed he had an item in his hand. When officers made contact with the suspect, the suspect turned towards the officers, and fearing for their safety, one of the officers fired one shot.

The suspect wasn't hit and immediately surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. While canvassing the scene after the suspect surrendered, officers found what they believe the suspect was holding, a large BBQ lighter.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation, with help from the Elk Grove Police Department. Sgt. Shaun Hampton of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said law enforcement will probably be at the scene for the remainder of the day. 

The Elk Grove Police Department has placed the officer who fired the shot on administrative leave. Hampton described the suspect as a 25-year-old white male, but did not give any further identification.

An Elk Grove police officer was involved in a shooting Thursday morning.

The incident occurred along the 8000 block of Orchard Loop Lane, near Texas Roadhouse. According to limited information provided, the officer involved is OK and the suspect has been detained.
