Kidnapping suspect in stable condition after being shot by police in Stockton

Authorities told ABC10 the incident first started in San Jose, where investigators were looking into a kidnapping-carjacking case that involved a “parolee-at-large”.

STOCKTON, Calif. — An alleged kidnapping suspect was critically injured Thursday night after being shot by police officers in a Stockton neighborhood.

Authorities told ABC10 the incident first started in San Jose, where investigators were looking into a kidnapping-carjacking case that involved Ontoniel Cornejo, 23, parolee-at-large, from San Jose.

San Jose police said they learned the suspect they were looking for was at a home on the 4500 block of Mist Trail Drive in Stockton. Stockton police officers along with a California Department of Corrections Fugitive Apprehension Team, went to the home to arrest the suspect.

According to police, the unidentified suspect tried to run from the home. But once he realized he was surrounded, he ran back inside.

After other residents inside the home made it out safe, investigators say the suspect came out and confronted officers with a gun. Officers fired their weapons and hit the suspect.

He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, however, after surgery, has been upgraded to stable condition. No officers were injured.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave while the incident remains under investigation.
