Man arrested for trespassing at Golden 1 Center dies at hospital

A man trespassing inside the Golden 1 Center on July 2 went "unresponsive" during his arrest. On July 4, he died at the hospital.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The man arrested while trespassing inside the Golden 1 Center died at the hospital two days the incident, Sacramento Police said.

It happened on July 2. Sacramento police responded to the Golden 1 Center on a trespassing call around 3:30 a.m., where arena security officers said man was acting erratically, running inside the building, refusing commands, and appeared to be under the influence of drugs.

“When officers arrived on scene, a subject was already detained and handcuffed by security,” Sacramento Police Cpl. Luis Canela told ABC10.

Even though he was handcuffed, police said the man continued to thrash around and struggle, so they used “maximum restraint” technique to get him under control. The technique is only allowed as a last resort by some police departments.

According to police, the man became unresponsive as they were taking him into custody. He was taken to the hospital where he died sometime on July 4. Police issued a press release about the man’s death just after 5 p.m. on July 8. So far, investigators have not identified the man nor have they released a cause of death.

When asked why it took four days to notify the media about the man’s death, a Sacramento Police spokesperson replied, “No further information at this time. Our investigation is still active and ongoing.”

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will identify the man after notifying next of kin, police said.
