Timeline: Shooting of slain Sacramento Police Officer Tara O'Sullivan

The death of Officer Tara O'Sullivan marks the first line of duty death for the Sacramento Police Department in 20 years.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — On Wednesday, June 19 the Sacramento Police Department experienced it's first line of duty death in 20 years. Officer Tara O'Sullivan was shot and killed in north Sacramento while helping a domestic disturbance victim gather her things.

As shots continued, officers were not able to get O'Sullivan out of the area and to the hospital until at least 40 minutes after she was shot. She later died of her injuries at UC Davis Medical Center.

Neighbors in the area were evacuated or warned to stay in their homes for nearly eight hours as the gunman, believed to be armed with a rifle, continued to shoot at police and sheriff's deputies. 

Below is a timeline of how the shooting unfolded.

Wednesday, June 19


• 11:43 a.m.: The Sacramento Police Department received a call about a domestic disturbance between a man and woman. 

• 3:30 p.m.: Officers connected with the same woman at a home in Arden in the 3700 block of Esperanza Drive. 

• 5:41 p.m.: Several officers, including Officer Tara O'Sullivan, went with the woman to a home in the 200 block of Redwood Avenue in north Sacramento to standby as she gathers some of her things from the house. 

• 6:10 p.m.: Officers reported that shots were fired, and one officer was hit. The shooter continued a barrage of bullets, from what police said seemed to be rifle, firing multiple times while officers sought safety. 

• 6:54 p.m.: Officers in an armored vehicle arrived at the house on Redwood Avenue to rescue Officer O'Sullivan.

• 6:59 p.m.: Crews were successful in getting to Officer O'Sullivan and transported her to UC Davis Medical Center in serious condition.

• 8:42 p.m.: 

In the first official update of the night, the Sacramento Police Department confirmed that an officer was hit by gunfire and warned neighbors and media to keep away as the gunman continued to shoot.

Sacramento Police Sgt. Vance Chandler said that the shooter is a man who knew the woman officers were helping at the home. Chandler said the department was not sure how the two were connected. 

Homes were evacuated and neighbors were asked again to stay in their homes to avoid being shot by the gunman, or by police crossfire.

9 p.m. - Midnight: 

While the police department did not give a clear timeline of what went on between 9 p.m. and midnight, we do know from ABC10 reporter accounts that shots continued until at least 9 p.m. Wednesday night.


Thursday, June 20


• Midnight: While still not officially confirmed to media, ABC10 reporters were there as a procession for fallen Officer O'Sullivan began and her body is taken from the hospital. 

•  12:45 a.m.: 

In the second update of the night, the Sacramento Police Department officially named Tara O'Sullivan as the officer who was killed in the shooting on Redwood Avenue. 

"We are devastated," the Department says in a Tweet. "There are no words to convey the depth of the sadness we feel, or how heartbroken we are for the family of our young, brave officer."

Officer Tara O'Sullivan, 26, was killed Wednesday night in a north Sacramento shooting. She graduated from the police academy in December 2018.

The department said that the area was still very active and that the shooter had not yet been caught. 

• 1:54 a.m.: Officers with the crisis negotiation team were able to make contact with the shooter. He surrendered and was arrested by 1:54 a.m., nearly eight hours after the first shots were reported.  

• 3:50 a.m.: An end of watch call for Officer O'Sullivan is sent out over the police scanners. 

• 5:55 a.m.: The alleged shooter, Adel Sambrano Ramos, was booked into the Sacramento County Jail on Thursday at 5:55 a.m. on charges relating to the murder of Sacramento Police Officer Tara O’Sullivan.
