Car crashes are one of the leading causes of death for children and only one out of four car seats are correctly installed. A properly installed car seat can reduce the risk of infant deaths in crashes by 71% and of toddlers by 54%. But the seat must be installed correctly.

Buckle Up for Life is a national child passenger safety education program, created by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Toyota, and their goal is to empower all families to buckle up and go safely.

Here are some top car seat tips and techniques from Buckle Up for Life:

  • Use the “Inch Test” and “Pinch Test”
  • Save the Towels for Your Beach Chair
  • Just like Sunscreen, Car Seats Expire
  • Secure Loose Items in the Car
  • Don’t rent a car seat

There are also a lot of things to consider as you choose the right car seat for your child.
