Homes, strip mall damaged in 2-alarm fire on Sunset Avenue in Fair Oaks

The fire started around 9 a.m. on Sunset Avenue in Fair Oaks.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Multiple people are without homes Thursday, after a 2-alarm fire on Sunset Avenue in Fair Oaks.

Mary Stamschror arrived to get her hair cut at one of the businesses when she noticed smoke. She said that she warned people at the business and started to also warn others in surrounding buildings.

The fire started around 8:45 a.m near the northeast corner of the building on Thursday, according to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire. In videos shared the department, thick black smoke can be seen billowing out of windows and front doors.

At least two of the four residential units and between four and six business units have been affected. Firefighters said a majority of the damage took place in what appeared to be residential units.

No injuries have been reported. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Andrea Young lives next door and owns Royal Oil Manufacturing, one of the businesses in the complex. She said people were living in the back unit though they were not supposed to be there.

"We've been trying to get rid of people living here for a long time and now," said Young. "These buildings are really old, there's a lot of stuff that needs to be done to it and it just hasn't been done."

ABC10 reached out to LOA Properties. They said to their knowledge, no one was living in the burned unit. They explained it was a manager's unit where items were stored.
