13 local back-to-school supply drives for Solano, Placer, and Yolo counties

Whether residents intend to pick-up supplies for a child in need or drop-off supplies, there are plenty of community events and backpack drives aiming to provide students a good start for the new school year.

With a new school year about a month from starting, local community organizations in Solano County, Placer County, and Yolo County are stepping up to provide school supplies to kids in need.

1. Back to School Resource Fair, Placer County Office of Education

  • Supplies resources for families that are homeless. Donations can be made at Parkside Church in Auburn.
  • Seeking gift cards, new gently used clothing, haircutting services
  • Events will be in Roseville (July 30) and Auburn (August 1)

2. "Annual Backpack Outreach Helping kids and Youth in Need," The Rock of Roseville

  • Seeking to purchase backpacks for 225 kids and youth
  • $15 provides a new backpack with school supplies, tax deductible donation
  • Donated supplies can be dropped off at The Rock’s weekend services but no later than the 11 a.m. service on July 29.

3. "Life Matters Backpack Drive," Bridgeway Church and Life Matters

  • A partnership between Bridgeway and Life Matters will host a Back to School Night Celebration in two locations on August 7.
  • Their goal is to provide 500 backpacks, preferably filled with supplies.
  • Drop-off is located in the Bridgeway Main Lobby, located 8150 Industrial Avenue in Building A in Roseville through August 5.
  • Back to School Night takes place August 7 at Logan Park Apartments, located at 4215 Palm Ave. in Sacramento from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Point Natomas Apartments, located 3430 Binghamton Dr. in Sacramento from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

4. "Love our City Backpack Giveaway," Destiny Church

  • Free BBQ lunch, haircuts, pop-up clothing boutique, bounce houses, and kids games.
  • Open to the public.
  • Offering 2,000 backpacks on a first come, first served basis.
  • Even occurs August 4 from 9:30 a.m. at Johnson Springview Park, located 5480 5th St. in Rocklin.

5. "Back to School Backpack Drive," Spring Valley Church

  • Collecting backpacks and school supplies until August 5.
  • Collecting items for local distribution and for sister church in Oakland
  • Located 2640 Sunset Blvd. in Rocklin.

Yolo County

6. "Pack the Patrol Car School Backpack Donation Drive," Davis Police Department

  • Seeking backpacks filled with school supplies. Click here for full list.
  • Drop-offs accepted at David Police Department, located 2600 5th St. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday until August 14.
  • Officers will deliver backpacks to Davis elementary, junior high, and high schools in their beats before school starts. School staff will give the backpacks to students in need.

7. "Back to School Supply Drive and Resource Fair," Yolo County Children’s Alliance

  • Raising funds to purchase 700 backpacks filled with school supplies and other supports like hygiene kits and bikes for West Sacramento students.
  • $15 will provide a backpack filled with supplies.
  • The Back to School Health Fair and distribution takes place August 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at West Sacramento Family Resource Center, located 637 Todhunter Ave., #21B, in West Sacramento.

  • Donations accepted at 5100 Business Center Drive in Fairfield and Golden Hills Education Center located 2460 Clay Bank Rd., Bldg. 7A in Fairfield.
  • Seeking new backpacks to help foster and homeless youth go back to school

10. "All Bar BBQ/Backpack Drive," Asian Pacific Bar Association of Solano County

  • Event occurs August 10 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Benicia City Park, located 150 Military West in Benicia.

12. "Annual Backpack Drive in Vacaville," Shiloh Baptist Church

  • Hope to distribute a minimum of 60 loaded backpacks to students K-12 in the Vacaville area, and are also seeking contributions of backpacks or school supplies.
  • Drop-off can be made until August 2nd at the Shiloh Baptist Church in Vacaville from noon to 5 p.m.
  • Backpack giveaway occurs on August 5 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church, located at 185 Chandler St. in Vacaville.

13. “Let’s Get Ready for School!,” Vallejo Outreach

  • Aims to giveaway 2,000 pairs of shoes and will be providing a Health Fair with dental and eye exams, diabetes screenings, and access to a number of Social Service Agencies.
  • Activities will include a backpack giveaway, kids carnival, haircuts, and free lunch for those in attendance.
  • Shoe donations can be made by purchasing one or more pairs for children in 1st through 5th grade. Drop-off is available until July 31 at the Hill Vallejo, located 210 Locust Dr. in Vallejo.
