5 ways to keep your dogs active inside due to poor air quality outside

Animal Den Pet Resort showed five ways to keep dogs active inside with the poor air quality.

Friday marks the 15th consecutive "Spare the Air" day in the Sacramento area. And although the weekend's winds will improve the air, it still will not be healthy, according to Sac Metro Air District.

That could be a problem for those with four-legged family members. So, Animal Den Pet Resort showed five ways to keep dogs active inside with the poor air quality.

1. Puppy pit balls.

Fill up a box or a kiddie pool of crush proof balls for your dogs. Hide treats and make them search for them through the balls.

"They can look for the treats," said Lisa Chafee with Animal Den Pet Resort. "It really gets them thinking. If you're home and you wanna spread out their lunch or their dinner or breakfast in here they can dig around."

2. Swerve course.

Get a few cones and lead your pup with a treat.

"If you don't have cones you could always set up something like chairs in your house," Chafee said.

3. Hula Hoops.

"You can take them through a hula hoop and practice things like sitting on the ground," Chafee said.

4. Hurdles.

You can buy cones from a hardware store, put some notches in, and then put in a PVC pipe through the cones.

5. Brain exercises.

Use a different surface for your dog to do commands.

Many of the items can be found at a hardware store or on Amazon. Make sure to encourage the dogs through each obstacle with a treat and a congratulations.
