Celebrate Día de los Muertos with this local business

In Midtown Sacramento, you'll find local gift shop, Kulture. Their traditional altar is open to the public and people are welcome to take part.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The living are celebrating the dead at an altar in Midtown Sacramento. A traditional Día de los Muertos altar is open to the public at Kulture, a gift shop located on K street. 

Día de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is a tradition celebrated in Mexico on the first and second day of November. 

It was originally a harvest celebration for the Aztecs. It's celebrated in Mexico and parts of Central America, but it's also a tradition that is very much alive in the United States and celebrated here in Sacramento.

Kulture is welcoming people to bring pictures of their loved ones who have passed on and place them in the alter. Curators of the alter will be lighting candles and placing marigold flowers around the photographs.

Local business, Kulture, is observing Dia de los Muertos and their altar is open to the public.

Staff at Kulture will be answering questions and explaining the traditions of Día de los Muertos. If you are interested in learning more, visit Kulter at 2331 K Street. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The 'ofrenda' is often set on a table with a fine tablecloth or covering. Pictures of the deceased relative or friend are assembled alongside candles--the light is thought to guide the deceased to the altar.
