Thirty-five people had to be treated after being pepper sprayed inside a bus en route to Sacramento.

Thirty-five people had to be treated after being pepper sprayed inside a bus en route to Sacramento, Tuesday evening.

According to the California Highway Patrol, a passenger set off the pepper spray on the bus as it traveled on westbound on Interstate 80 in Auburn, California, around 8:50 p.m. The bus was traveling from Reno to Sacramento.

The bus driver pulled over on WB I-80 near the Bowman Street exit in Auburn. There, authorities say, the suspect took off on foot, jumped onto another car, and tried to make that driver continue to drive. That driver refused and soon CHP officers arrived and took the suspect into custody. That person has not yet been identified.

In all, 35 people on the bus were treated for pepper spray inhalation. No one suffered any serious injuries. The case remains under investigation.

A spokesperson from Greyhound issued the following statement on this incident:

“I can confirm that there was an incident in which pepper spray was sprayed on the bus while en route to Sacramento. We’re currently conducting an investigation to determine what [led] to the incident. All customers have evacuated the bus and a relief bus will arrive in about 30 minutes to pick up the customers and continue the trip.”
