At least 360 live birds have been seized and nearly 60 others were found dead inside a Nevada County business in the small town of Rough & Ready last week.

Nevada County sheriff’s deputies were tasked with making a welfare check on the business, following the purchase of a piglet at the location on Nov. 2.

The piglet allegedly required emergency veterinarian care following the purchase for an injury that had gone untreated, deputies said.

When deputies followed up at the Harvest Lane business, they discovered the large number of animals inside in distress and a veterinarian was called out to the scene, according to deputies.

The birds have since been placed in the care of Animal Place, where they will be treated for starvation and tested for disease, deputies said.

Criminal charges are expected to be filed with the Nevada County District Attorney’s Office.
