CALIFORNIA, USA — Twelve people, including two pedestrians, have died on California roads since the start of the California Highway Patrol's Independence Day Maximum Enforcement Period began on July 3, 2019.
In additions to the 12 victims who died, nearly 600 people have been arrested for driving under the influence. Enforcement began on July 3 and through 6 a.m. Friday, July 5, 68 drivers in the Sacramento Valley account for that 589 person total.
The Maximum Enforcement Period aims to enforce speed limit laws and allows all officers to watch for any signs of impaired driving. During this time period, all available CHP officers are out on the road.
The Maximum Enforcement Period will be in effect until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 7.
