Tuesday's story:

I-80 has reopened after three days of being closed, but only to essential commercial trucks and vehicles. The interstate was temporarily closed due to record-setting snow in the Lake Tahoe area.

The announcement from Caltrans means both Highway 50 and I-80 are open to motorists, but it also comes as the National Weather Service advises against mountain travel due to heavy snow expected between midnight and 7 a.m. Earlier, Caltrans also recommended staying home due to the traffic impacts and weather conditions along Highway 50.

Severe weather has been sweeping parts of the U.S. and brought frigid temperatures to the Pacific Northwest and heavy snow to mountains in Northern California and Nevada.

I-80 Updates

I-80 reopened in both directions from Colfax to the Nevada State-line, but only for essential commercial trucks and vehicles.

Chain controls are R2 from Stateline to Drum Forebay.

US-50 Updates

According to Caltrans, there is a significant amount of traffic on Highway 50 putting the highway at capacity. Caltrans highly recommends that people stay home and do not travel.

The City of South Lake Tahoe said a number of resources are at or near capacity, including gas, tow trucks and lodging. Officials said people risk hours-long delays on the highway and possibly getting stranded on roadways.

Only essential travel is advised at this time.

Caltrans said traffic in the South Lake Tahoe area remains a major issue for Tuesday night.
